Dalic Warns Croatia’s World Cup Opener Against England Could Be a Game-Changer

Dalic admits Croatia’s World Cup opener against England ‘can destroy everything’

Zlatko Dalic regards Croatia’s opening match against England in the World Cup as crucial for their chances this summer. He acknowledged that a less challenging first fixture might have been beneficial for a squad grappling with issues of form and fitness.

Before heading to the U.S., Croatia secured a 2-1 victory over Slovenia in their last friendly. However, Dalic is expected to encounter selection dilemmas as they prepare to take on England on June 17. The Manchester City duo, Mateo Kovacic and Josip Gvardiol, are both returning from injuries, which adds to the concern that Dalic’s team, who finished third in 2022 and were runners-up four years ago, may start the tournament on a negative note.

“Perhaps, because the initial match can ruin everything,” Dalic remarked when asked about his preference for facing England later in the group stage. “At Euro 2024, we suffered a 3-0 defeat to Spain in our first game and couldn’t recover. In the past, we’ve triumphed over Nigeria in 2018 and drawn with Morocco in 2022.”

“We have no choice now. The opening game is the most critical one. We will fight against England, aiming to give our best and secure a win.”

Luka Modric, who donned a protective mask while recovering from a fractured cheekbone, scored a stunning goal in Varazdin. However, he is among a few key players in Dalic’s squad who are lacking in match fitness. “Kovacic, Gvardiol, and Modric haven’t played much recently and are not at their peak form,” he noted. “Especially Kovacic, who has barely played this season, and we need him. It’s a tough situation, and we require time. Our roster isn’t large, and these players are essential for us.”

Dalic, who led Croatia to victory over England in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, refrained from commenting on any lingering psychological effects on their opponents, emphasizing that England has since claimed two victories over Croatia. He praised Thomas Tuchel’s squad and expressed admiration for their extensive preparation in the U.S. England arrived in Miami a week ago, even though their match against Croatia, set for Dallas, isn’t scheduled until June 17.

“A very formidable team from the best league in the world, known for their offensive and rapid play,” he stated. “We must elevate our game.”

“I observed their match against New Zealand, but it wasn’t a genuine scenario; it was something else entirely. It demonstrates the seriousness of your team when they arrive in America nearly 20 days in advance for preparation. Still, I remain optimistic; I will encourage my team and do everything possible to secure a win.”
