Amad Diallo’s Late Goal Secures Côte d’Ivoire’s Win Over Ecuador

Amad Diallo scores 90th-minute winner as Côte d’Ivoire leave it late to sink Ecuador

In a thrilling showdown, Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Côte d’Ivoire, scoring a decisive goal in the 90th minute to secure a 1-0 victory against Ecuador in their Group E opener.

Diallo’s expertly placed shot following a cross from Wilfried Singo marked Côte d’Ivoire’s first World Cup win against a South American team, ending Ecuador’s impressive unbeaten streak of 19 matches.

This match also showcased the talent of 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who delivered a standout performance, helping the Ivorians level on points with Germany, who earlier dominated Curacao with a 7-1 scoreline.

Match Highlights

The young Ivorian squad, the most youthful team in this World Cup, initially struggled to penetrate Ecuador’s defense. However, Singo’s driving run down the right flank changed the momentum. His cross found Diallo perfectly, allowing the Manchester United forward to guide the ball into the bottom left corner, giving the West Africans a fantastic start in their first World Cup finals appearance since 2014.

Ecuador’s best opportunities in the first half came from Côte d’Ivoire’s defensive lapses, with John Yeboah and Alan Minda both hitting the crossbar in the 23rd and 30th minutes, respectively.

Côte d’Ivoire maintained better possession overall, with Diomande posing a constant threat on the left side. In the 35th minute, he seized the ball at midfield, outpacing Piero Hincapié and delivering a cross that Nicolas Pépé attempted to convert, only to have his shot blocked.

Second Half Action

The Ivorians began the second half with renewed vigor, but it was Ecuador’s Gonzalo Plata whose shot in the 68th minute forced a comfortable save from goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Earlier, Diomande continued to shine, sending a cross that Elye Wahi nearly converted in the 52nd minute, striking the crossbar. After a tactical switch in the 56th minute, Diomande displayed his skill by maneuvering through multiple defenders before shooting over the goal.

Despite the match taking place near a large community of Ecuadorian Americans in New York and New Jersey, the La Tricolor fans left the stadium disappointed.
